About the Program: Historically, sleep apnea has been considered a condition that only affects obese males, but we have learned it can affect anyone. Understanding the risk factors associated with airway disordered sleep will slow the progression of the disease and help the patient and dentist understand the risks associated with different treatments. The gold standard for the treatment of sleep apnea is the CPAP, but many cannot tolerate the masks and are looking for an alternative. The oral sleep appliance is one treatment alternative that can help sleep quality for those who suffer from mild to moderate sleep apnea or are not able to tolerate the CPAP. Dentistry can play a more significant role in the prevention of the disease through early intervention. Recognizing warning signs in children and stimulating growth, will create a larger airway and help prevent poor sleep quality. But the questions arise: Why aren’t they growing correctly? Is it due to mouth breathing or an inability of the mandible to grow? Dentists can better discuss treatment options with an accurate diagnosis.
